LDN Talks @ Night | The Science of Psychedelics

  • Boondocks

The science of psychedelics and exceptional human experience

The traditional use of psychoactive plants and fungi for spiritual and shamanic rituals has occurred for thousands of years, whereas the Western scientific research of these substances has only been explored in the last 100 years, and prohibition stalled the last 50 years of this.

Now that scientific research is resuming, what do psychedelics tell us about the weirder side of human consciousness, and what can be learned from the traditional shamanic practices with these substances?

Dr David Luke is Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Greenwich where he teaches an undergraduate course on the Psychology of Exceptional Human Experience.

His research focuses on trans-personal experiences, anomalous phenomena and altered states of consciousness, especially via psychedelics, having published more than 100 academic papers in this area, including five books, most recently Neurotransmissions: Essays on Psychedelics (2015) and Talking with the Spirits: Ethnographies from Between the Worlds (2014)

He has studied techniques of consciousness alteration from South America to India, from the perspective of scientists, shamans and Shivaites, but increasingly has more questions than answers.

Doors open at 7pm and lecture begins at 7.30pm sharp!

CineTalks | Bridget Jones: Is Monogamy Possible?

Followed by a screening of Bridget Jone's Baby - starring Rene Zellweger.

Does the film 'Bridget Jones Baby' reveal the answer to the perennial question - is Monogamy Possible? Join us at an exclusive pop up cinema near Old Street for a screening of the latest film in the hit Bridget Jones series: 'Bridget Jones's Baby'

Without wishing to spoil the plot of the hit rom com movie 'Bridget Jones Baby', the heroine Bridget Jones finds herself torn between two men but this is recurring theme in romantic films - perhaps because it reflects real life? In the perhaps the most famous romantic film of all time, 'Casablanca', the heroine has to make a choice between two very different kinds of men, both of whom she is drawn to, but for very different reasons. The latest evolutionary biological and psychological research finds that women find very different kinds of men attractive depending on the 'time of the month' or where they are in their monthly ovulatory cycle.

Come and watch 'Bridget Jones Baby', then discuss whether we are biologically programmed to be monogamous or should we be realistic and negotiate new kinds of relationships on the age of dating apps and 'hook-ups'? Dr Raj Persaud, a Harley Street Psychiatrist will be talking about the psychology and biology of love, romance and commitment then discussing what the film really means after the screening.

Doors will open at 6.15pm, The talk will begin promptly at 7pm.

Execution in Iraq:

Behind the Scenes of the Trial & Execution of Saddam Hussein

In the dawn hours of December 2006, with a hangman’s noose about his neck, Iraq’s seemingly brutal dictator, Saddam Hussein, uttered his final words before the gallows trapdoor opened and he tumbled the few short feet to his death. Jonathan Tait-Harris, having been in Iraq from 2004 to 2006 and directly involved, takes you behind the scenes of the investigation, trial and execution of Saddam Hussein. He will paint a vivid and bold picture of the reality of Saddam’s prosecution, its fairness, its personalities, its danger, its frail egos and equip his audience with tomorrow’s ‘water-cooler moment'.

Doors will Open at 7pm, The talk will begin promptly at 7.30pm.

LDN Talks @ Night | Yugoslavia War: The Human Cost

  • Boondocks

For 1425 days, the European and Olympic city  Sarajevo was subjected to the longest siege of a capital city in the history of modern warfare. Tens of thousands of civilians died at the hands of Bosnian Serb forces. A former President, Radovan Karadžić, and Bosnian Serb generals,  Stanislav Galić and Dragomir Milošević, were jailed for their command roles in the siege.

In 1998 and 1999 - war raged in Kosovo between Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) and the Serbian Army. NATO provided air support to the KLA ground forces. Thousands died and thousands more fled for their lives.

Jonathan Tait-Harris, a United Nations war crimes investigator, found himself in Kosovo during the immediate aftermath; witnessing first hand the civilian dead and the shocking reality of mass killings. He also investigated and prosecuted the bloody events that befell besieged Sarajevo.

Jonathan will take you behind the scenes of the criminal investigation and into the hearts and minds of the survivors. Let him describe and introduce you to the surgeons at the Hitna Pomoć (Accident & Emergency hospital) who, after days of power cuts implemented by the besieging forces in -20C weather, had to place their hands into victims’ wounds to warm them sufficiently to be able to operate.

LDN Talks @ Night | From Depression to Empowerment

  • Boondocks London

The Journey begins with the Journey within

You create anything from nothing.

Former Cityworker Vaz Sriharan experienced intense depression and suicidal tendencies for over 15 years. He was informed medically that he would have this for life. However, after many years of exploration he emerged from depression using a blend of Psychotherapy, Energy Healing and Spiritual Practices. In 2007 he set up a Spirituality group to meet likeminded others in London, meeting in a Costa cafe one day. This group exploded from an initial meeting of three to 60 by the end of the month. Today in 2017 the group has over 13,000 members passionate about exploring their spirituality. The London College of Spirituality runs Talks, Workshops, Retreats around the world. Their drive is to EMPOWER individuals to tap into something innate that exists within all - the potential to be anything, become anyone, achieve anything.

Millions of people around the world are waking up to something. Something within.

Deep inside, you have access to infinite wisdom, love, power - we have simply not been taught that this is even possible. Spiritual Transformation occurs on every level and shows us that we are far more connected to our reality than the surface may show. In a western world filled with material distraction, depression has reached epidemic proportions. Yet many are transforming at phenomenal rates by exploring their own spirituality. Vaz works with the principle of Reflection - that our outer reality reflects the world within. By understanding our outer world, we understand what’s happening inside of us. By shifting the world within, we shift the world outside.

Vaz will end the talk with a guided meditation to tap into your own inner field of consciousness – giving you access to Peace and Wellbeing.

Doors will Open at 7pm, The talk will begin promptly at 7.30pm.
